CONTINENT

The Three Suns setting is centered around a planet called Solenir, which is roughly 180% the size of Earth. One of Solenir's main differences from Earth, however, is how it orbits the Three Suns. As a result of these differences, the northern pole has very high, "equatorial-like" temperatures. The far south has short summers and bitter, arctic winters.

There are various continents on the planet of Solenir, but the largest and most populated is the Continent of Catalania. The Continent's name dates back to a time when most of the continent was under the control of a great nation called the Empire of Catalania. Although the Empire still exists, it is not nearly as powerful in this era as it was in ages past.

The Continent of Catalania reaches to both the northern and the southern poles, and is mostly unexplored, due mainly to its vast size. The south (along with Catalania City) is widely believed to be where Feline / Human civilization originated, although evidence of ancient cultures in other parts of the continent has been discovered. Also, there is the Legend of Creation, which points to the Snar Mountains in the Northwest as the location from which the Feline race first appeared. Still, the weight of factual evidence encountered in southern cities, such as Pallassi and Port Serval, has cast serious doubt on the veracity of portions of the Legend of Creation.

For a centuries, most of the continent was unified under the Imperial government. But two centuries ago a major rebellion occurred in the Snar Mountains and the ensuing decade-long war generated more casualties than any other conflict in the last millennium, and offered the opportunity for nearly every Imperial state to become an independent nation.

Races of Three Suns

Catalania is populated by a variety of races, like elves and hobbits. One of these races in particular, however, is unique to Three Suns as a major race.

These are the felines, and are quite similar to humans apart from the fact that they look like humanoid cats. Felines are very much like humans in that they share the same interests, desires, and daily life as they do. In fact, felines and humans live in the same societies. Apart from this, the average feline is more agile than an average human, and lives approximately 33% longer. Also, felines cannot cross-breed with other races, and do not have tails.

The approximate racial breakdown for the continent of Catalania is as follows:

Population Comparison / Approximate

Humans 36%

Felines 34%

Elves 8%

Halflings 8%

Dwarves 7%

Orcs 4%

Goblins 3%

Feline And Human Society

Felines and humans make up the main population of most of the large cities and towns. The fact that procreation between the two races cannot exist has not stopped them from creating societies where there are virtually no racial barriers. In fact, in these nations, race is simply not a social issue.

Racial problems had not even been recorded in history. They did once exist, however, before the Barbarian Wars, but those very wars caused the vast social unification of the Empire that, eventually, led to the elimination of all forms of racism.

Racial dissension was only to resurface seventy years after the Kingdom of Freemen was created. The principles spread by Villarius Dask late in the 3rd century had not had a great impact on the people of that region, but slowly grew in popularity until the return of the Dask reign in 468PO.

Felines and humans share just about everything, from ideology to religion, and in all regions except for those formerly controlled by Freemen, racial harmony is a fact of daily life.

Elves

Elves, when present in these societies, become part of this feline-human interaction as well. The main reason Elves are not more prevalent is that they simply do not live in the cities of felines and humans. In fact, their nations are completely hidden from all other races. They discourage their members to leave these nations, and make every effort not to be found.

Which, of course, causes a great number of curious elves to set out into the world, many times leaving their homes behind forever. It is the open minds (as far as racial interaction is involved) of the populace of feline-human nations that encourages them to become members of those societies.

In countries such as Balton and the Empire, the human/elf ratio is 70:1.

Orcs and Goblins

Goblins, who are about the size of Halflings, are green, and have bulging big eyes. These loud creatures are usually pushy, and have high-pitched voices.

Goblins almost never socialize with the other races, who consider them "monsters." Children sometimes fear these "goblins" as the creatures of bedtime stories, and their parents may honestly believe they don't exist.

Orcs are big and strong, although without the massive structure of Dwarves. Orcs are usually short tempered, opinionated, and can be very violent. They visage vaguely resembles the pig, and they have beige-brown skin color.

Orcs sometimes become members of the open societies, but prejudice exists. Note that there is no history of Orcs being a great evil threat. Their nature is the cause of their unfavorable reputation.

Dwarves

Dwarves are quite unique in Three Suns. The shortest dwarves are around 1.90 meters in height, and thier physical structure is larger, and more muscular, and more solid.

This race is among the most rarely seen in the cities of the continent. Even in Catalania, where the Empire has an alliance with Kar Koroeth, a dwarf is a very rare sight.

Dwarven societies only exist in dwarven cities, which are almost always in the mountains.

When a dwarf does leave his home, he will normally soon take up an occupation and settle down.

Halflings

Halflings are an interesting exception to the above mentioned social unification of humans and felines. They tend to come together within cities, and form their own work guilds as well. They are in by no means prejudiced, but the lack of support they receive from governments and the general population has caused them to pull-together their resources.

Halflings are seen as mischievous, lazy, and sometimes even thieves. This can make thier lives difficult, but, still, halflings are the third largest race in the racially open nations of the continent.
